Ski Mountaineering Explained: The Newest Winter Olympic Sport

Athletes climb uphill on skis fitted with climbing skins, which grip the snow. On steep sections, they remove their skis, strap them to their packs, and climb on foot. At the top, they remove the skins and ski down.

Much of the drama happens in the transition zones, where athletes switch between climbing and descending modes. Elite racers can do this in seconds, and a fumble can cost a race.

The Olympic programme featured short, spectator-friendly formats — a sprint and a mixed relay — rather than the long mountain races that are traditional in the sport.

Many ski resorts allow uphill skiing on designated routes, and clubs offer introductory sessions. Backcountry touring requires avalanche training and proper equipment.
