Rugby Union Scoring: Tries, Conversions, and Kicks

Rugby union scores can change quickly. Teams score through tries, conversions, penalty goals, and drop goals.

Here is what each is worth and how they happen.

Try: 5 points

A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opponent's in-goal area.

Conversion: 2 points

After a try, the scoring team attempts a kick at goal from a point in line with where the try was scored.

Penalty goal: 3 points

After certain infringements, a team can choose to kick at goal.

Drop goal: 3 points

A player drops the ball and kicks it through the posts during open play.

Penalty try: 7 points

Awarded when foul play prevents a probable try. No conversion is needed.
