Curling looks simple: slide heavy granite stones toward a target. But the strategy is deep, which is why fans call it chess on ice.

Here is what you need to know to follow a game.

The objective

Two teams take turns sliding stones toward the house — the circular target. After all stones are thrown in an end, the team with the stone closest to the centre scores a point for each stone closer than the opponent’s best.

Why they sweep

Sweeping briefly warms the ice surface and reduces friction, helping the stone travel further and curl less. Sweepers can fine-tune the stone’s path.

The hammer

The last stone of an end is called the hammer, and it is a big advantage. Teams often try to score two or more points with the hammer, or keep it for the next end.

Common shots

Draw: stops in a specific spot
Guard: placed in front of the house to protect other stones
Takeout: knocks an opponent’s stone out of play

Etiquette

Curling has a strong tradition of sportsmanship. Players often call their own fouls and shake hands before and after matches.
