Biathlon combines two very different skills: the heart-pounding effort of cross-country skiing and the calm precision of rifle shooting.

It is one of the most popular winter sports in parts of Europe.

The basics

Athletes ski a course and stop at the range to shoot at five targets, either lying down (prone) or standing. Prone targets are smaller; standing is harder because the body is less stable.

Penalties

Depending on the format, each miss means skiing a short penalty loop or having time added. A single missed shot can decide a race.

The challenge

Athletes arrive at the range with high heart rates and must steady their breathing to shoot accurately. Balancing speed on the course with control at the range is the key skill.

Race formats

Sprint: shorter race with two shooting stages
Pursuit: start order based on a previous race
Individual: longest race, with time penalties for misses
Mass start: everyone starts together
Relays: team events

Watching tips

Watch the shooting range — fortunes change quickly there. Positions can swing dramatically after a single stage.

This is general sports information and commentary. Rules, schedules, and records change — check official league, federation, and event sources for the latest details. Consult a qualified coach or medical professional before starting a new training programme.
